Tackling mould with eco-friendly materials is often more effective than using standard bleach, which can actually leave "roots" behind in porous surfaces. Natural acids and antifungals penetrate deeper to kill the spores.
White Vinegar: Its 5% acidity kills about 80% of mould species, including black mould. Unlike bleach, it can penetrate porous materials like drywall or wood.
Tea Tree Oil: A powerful natural fungicide that kills spores and prevents their return. While expensive, a small amount goes a long way.
Oxygen Bleach ("Green Bleach"): A non-toxic alternative to chlorine bleach that uses oxygen to break down mould protein structures without toxic fumes.
2. How to Clean Specific Areas
Walls & Ceilings: Undiluted VinegarSpray neat white vinegar directly on the mould. Let it sit for 1 hour. Scrub with a brush, then wipe with a damp cloth.
Silicone Sealant: Vinegar & Bicarb PasteMix 4 tbsp vinegar with 8 tbsp baking soda to make a thick paste. Apply to the sealant and leave overnight. Scrub with an old toothbrush the next morning.
Grout & TilesTea: Tree SprayMix 2 tsp tea tree oil with 2 cups of water. Spray and do not rinse; the oil needs to stay on the surface to kill the fungus.
Fabrics / Clothes: Vinegar SoakSoak items in a 1:1 vinegar and water solution for 45 minutes. Wash on the hottest setting safe for the fabric and sun-dry if possible.
